Day 1 - Florence
Museo dell'Opera del Duomo
In 1501 in this same place Michelangelo Buonarroti began working on the David which, not well sketched by Agostino di Duccio, had been abandoned for years in the courtyard of the building. The room was used as a repository for numerous works of art, marble decorations from monuments and sculpture models submitted to trial by the workers before the execution. For centuries it was like an open construction site to carry out the task of embellishing, decorating or restoring the entire complex of Piazza del Duomo. In the 19th century it was also organized as a Museum where there are catalogs, drawings, models and sculptures in marble made by great sculptors such as Luca dell Robbia, Donatello and other works of interest. The most significant works from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance and beyond will be admired.
The majestic Apuane mountains are the background to the beautiful coast of Versilia.
With your guide you will follow the history of the marble quarries with the various processing processes from the time of the Romans up to today’s modern techniques.
You will reach the widest marble field in the world and satisfy your technical and geological curiosities.
